A rechargeable battery powered by bacteria

About 3 billion dry-cell batteries are sold each year

Each household in the U.S discards about 8 of these batteries each year

Only 22 states in the U.S have enforced the proper disposal of these batteries with Acts in place, with 8 other states having some funding for the disposal of e-waste

Batteries are usually made up of heavy metals such lead, nickel, and cadmium

If these batteries aren't dispose of properly, then they can end up polluting our waterways and contaminating our soil

"Dry cell batteries contribute about 88 percent of the total mercury and 50 percent of the cadmium in the municipal solid waste stream"
